Although there is a lot of interest in the metaverse, which is regarded as the second Internet, there is little research on communication of metaverse users. The purpose of this study is to multi-dimensionally investigate the process of social presence, social interaction for social support, sense of community, and social capital formation of metaverse users. For this purpose, a survey was conducted with 300 people who actually use Zepeto and Roblox, which are currently representative metaverses. The results showed that, although metaverse use did not directly affect the social capital formation, multidimensional and sequential mediating effects of the perception of social presence, social interaction for social support, and sense of community of metaverse users on the formation of bridging and binding social capital were statistically significant. This study confirmed that solidarity and unity among people in metaverse are formed according to the perception of social presence, the level of social interaction of social support, and the sense of community, even considering the demographic characteristics of metaverse users and the channels of using Roblox and Zepeto. The results of this research are meaningful in that they illuminate the social meaning and value of the metaverse in a multidimensional manner from the perspective of media users and social capital formation.
